Two Words

[~] 2021 - Present
[] Radio show
[] "An exploration of dyadic interaction, Two Words is a monthly show by Able Archer based on preselected pairings and phrases. It's an attempt to describe the indescribable, and to relate the things we read and the things we hear: Ever changing."
[] Two Words is an organisational philosophy, an operating system, a lens for thinking about words and sound. The simplicity of the dichotomy is paramount - simultaneously highly specific and utterly meaningless. Below is an archive of the shows produced thus far, with liner notes and tracklists attached.

Tom was one of the first people I properly talked about music with. We shared a lot of nights out, a lot of sounds, and a lot of time ideating what would eventually become Texture Magazine. We last DJed together either at Cellar in Oxford, or in my uni room, recording a show for VIP.MIX ... it's a bit hazy on what happened when. Whichever occasion it was, it had been about 4 years since we shared the decks.

The time apart made it so much more pleasurable to come back together and record this show live. We didn't really do any collaorative prep, just steaming in with a vague sensibility to do what we've always done and hope for the best. It ended up being one of the most coherent back-to-back sessions I've ever put together, a reflection of how similar our tastes still are in many ways. The hazy morning sun shone down on the contemporary building site of Thamesmead, and we got to work trading 2 songs at a time. Dualities are everywhere. We were even both wearing Trilogy Tapes T-shirts for an extra dose of mirroring.

Really proud of this one and very grateful to share space with Sleepy T.

Able Archer · Burnt Glue

Burnt Glue

[] July, 2023
[] Tracklist:
The Isley Brothers - (At Your Best) You Are Love (Able Archer's Chop 'n' Glue)
Floetry - Say Yes
J. Albert - Two Head In a Frame Looking At Something Beautiful
bushes - Resignation For A Redevelopment At Catford Island
Hiroshima Mon Amour
Mind in Camden - Enchante
The Neptunes - Frontin'
Janet Jackson - That's The Way Love Is
Alicia Keys - Feeling U, Feeling Me
Cassandra Jenkins - Michaelangelo (Able Archer's Teardown)

Able Archer melts in the heat. 60 minutes of wilting slow jams and smudged souls emerge.

Featuring a number of chopped, screwed, dubbed and squashed tracks, mostly just crushed by me in Ableton into something resembling world-reord heatwaves and unbearable temperatures - superhot runoff of a world on fire trying desparately to stay cool. RnB sensibilities and cut-out chunks of dialogue from Hiroshima Mon Amour, documenting nuclear memory and absolution in 1950s Japan.

Able Archer · Rippling Pale

Rippling Pale

[] May, 2023
[] Tracklist:
Ricky Eat Acid - It rained for so long that my house floated away and I drowned
Peace Wong - About a Stalker
ukiyo-e - Canoe

7038634357 - Square Heart
Sun Kil Moon - Carissa
Kaiju - Creature
American Football - My Instincts Are the Enemy
fall river music project - shut up im dreaming

The crests of waves dissolving into mist. Long shadows and wildflowers.

This is a transitionary springtime mix. Ambience and the painful beauty of dead flowers.

Also I am rediscovering Enya and loving every second. Also also, DJ Corpmane is the most talented mixologist on the planet.

Also also also, it's completely unintentional but music by 7038 and Dedekind Cut always creeps into these mixes. The line between noise and life is too beautiful to be left untrodden. This one spoke to the chaos of my heart.

Been wanting to make this show for so long and I'm really glad to have it broadcast n archvied! Two Words: Front Blunt dove into a wealth of music / skate footy crossover, trying to chart a line thru all the different styles and approaches to the medium - Baker 3 to Lenz 3, Ryuichi Sakamoto to Natalie Imbruglia. I ripped the audio straight from the videos as the mix, the edit, the sounds of the street themselves are as formative in the final product as the song choices imo.

Able Archer · Late Spring

Late Spring

[] April, 2023
[] Tracklist:
Throughout: Beaver Pond Wildlife: Part 2 - Late Spring - New England Forests
Yo La Tengo - Driving Home
Celestial - Cinnamon Snowflake
Hiroshi Yoshimura - Singing Stream (Spring Mix)
Other Joe - Me If I Was A Shoe
Isik Kural - Che Si Aspette

Dylan Henner - Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence

Really excited to bring this one back, and particularly so given its new home on RTM !! The debut is a follow-up to last year's Early Spring. I've re-soundtracked the full hour of video as Ray Asselin narrates the second part of his year-long documentary project on the flora and fauna of New England.

It's the same homebaked DIY nature doc goodness, with spring-ier sounds to match the changing of the seasons.

Loved making this one, and very happy to be making radio again.

Lots more words to come, stay tuned 📻.
